Why have we developed the ACE scheme?
Many schools are now seeing the great benefits of using Starz as a safe environment in which young children can begin to learn how to behave appropriately when, later in life or outside school, they use social networking sites such as Facebook. Starz has always had key safety features, such as safe email, moderation of activity and whistle-blowing. We have now launched a formal programme which classes and children can undertake through Starz. The ACE (Accredited Competence in E-safety) scheme is used in conjunction with the Starz learning platform to develop and reward children’s awareness, skills and confidence in the online world. Tasks at each level of the scheme require children to demonstrate their competence by undertaking a series of online tasks. When they are ready, it challenge pupils to demonstrate responsible use beyond the safe Starz environment and so prepares them for transition to secondary schoo
How does ACE work?
Pupils are assigned a set of tasks to complete at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels. Once they are satisifed that the task is complete and acceptable they ask a buddy to check and sign their form. Once ten tasks in each level are complete a certificate will be awarded and their passport signed by an adult.
When should children start the ACE programme?
This scheme is specifically aimed at primary children. Pupils are required to work their way through each level, whatever age they join the scheme. Older more proficent users of Starz will move through the various tasks quite swiftly while younger pupils will need to pace themselves more and be ready for the next challenges.
How long will the scheme take to complete?
There is no specific start or end date, as the scheme encourages children to demonstrate that, not only are they able to demonstrated good behaviours at specific times, but that they adopt these behaviours and can take considered risks in a variety of circumstances.
What is the staff commitment to this scheme?
Staff can use the resources and tasks provided to guide their pupils through the scheme incorporating many of the tasks into their classroom activity. Alternatively, tasks can be assigned for home learning or the scheme could be run as an out- of-school club. We believe the scheme will always be more successful when teachers treat it as an important part of classroom learning.
What resources are needed to complete the scheme?
On signing up to the scheme, schools will have access to a set of online resources and learning materials for pupils, a community for their school's use with surveys, and tasks to guide their pupils through the scheme and a pack including self-review sheets and teacher's notes.
